Commenting on the latest
increase in the Live Register of unemployment, the Workers Party have said that it must never be forgotten that the figure
represents real people with families who are in real financial and social difficulties.
Louth Workers Party representative
Peter Short said that the 13,000 increase for April which brings the total to 388,600 when seasonally adjusted, bears out
the figures contained in the stark report issued by the Economic & Social Research Institute (ESRI) today which predicts
unemployment will reach 17% of the workforce or half a million people by the end of this year.
“When we see shocking
figures such as this it is obvious that the Fianna Fáil / Green Party coalition has lost all moral authority to govern this
country”, said Mr. Short. “The local and European elections
on June 5th will confirm that they are totally without a mandate to continue their present failed economic policies
which are making the situation worse by the day. Throwing more and more
money at the banks and speculators is merely pouring petrol on the inferno that has engulfed our economy”.
