Workers Party Councillor Ted Tynan said that government party TDs and Senators cannot hide behind the 12 week Dáil and Seanad holidays and that street politics would replace the political circus in Leinster House.

Cllr. Tynan was speaking as members of the Workers Party prepared to picket Fianna Fail junior minister Billy Kelleher’s constituency office in Dillon’s Cross on the north side of Cork City today (Friday).

The Cork city councillor said that government ministers and backbenchers would face a “Summer of Discontent” and an “Autumn of Anger” from ordinary people and that further cuts in health, education and welfare would not go without political consequences for those who support them.

“The disgraceful decision of the members of our national parliament to take a 12 week break at a time of national emergency shows contempt for the public,  particularly working people who are bearing the brunt of this government’s policies.  However if these public representatives think that they can hide for the next three months they are badly mistaken.   Whatever about our summer weather, it will be a long hot and uncomfortable recess for the Fianna Fáil / Green Party / Harney government”, said Cllr. Tynan.
